Ísleifur Ísleifsson was born in the Árnes settlement in New Iceland on March 28, 1897. He had the last name Helgason in the west.

Ísleifur was the son of Ísleifur Helgason and Oddfríður Þorleifsdóttir in the Árnes settlement. He began fishing at a young age on Lake Winnipeg and later in the Pacific Ocean. He returned to his hometown and started farming. Þórunn was the daughter of Einar Guðmundsson and Margrét Sigurðardóttir, who came west in 1887. She was interested in school affairs and was the secretary of the school board for many years.
