Jakob was just over 14 years old when he went to Norway in the fall of 1906. There he did some sailing but then moved to England at the beginning of the winter. There he was second mate on a cargo ship, then went to a maritime school and completed his pilot’s license in Durham in 1913. In the following years he sailed the world’s oceans on a British merchant ship. During World War I he was a pilot in the British Royal Navy. In 1919 he moved to the United States, where he received a residence permit in 1922 and settled in New York. He received his captain’s license in the United States in 1923.
