Sigurður came west to Manitoba in 1899 with his mother, Þórunn Þórðardóttir, and sisters, Solveig and Sigríður. Gunnlaugur Ólafsson came with Sigríður and their son, 3 year-old Þórður Ólafur. Gunnlaugur soon took land in the Árdals Settlement, but Þórunn, Sigurður, and Solveig first lived in Selkirk. Þórunn then took land near Sigríður and Gunnlaugur. In 1906, Sigurður took land in the settlement, started farming, and in 1911, bought his mother’s land. Sigurður and Jódís lived well and long in the community.
