Jóhann Björnsson was born in Skagafjarðarsýsla in 1886. He took the last name Dalmann in the west.

Jóhann came west in 1905 to Winnipeg, Manitoba. He work in Argyle but then took land in the Lakes Settlement (Vatnabyggð) in Saskatchewan in 1907. He sold that land, but bought other in the Kandahar/Dafoe area. He went to Iceland in 1912 and brought back his wife and mother in Dalabær in Eyjafjarðarsýsla. When they came to the Lakes Settlement, Jóhann took land southeast of Kandahar and cultivated it. A huge hailstorm in 1916 destroyed a large area, so he returned the land and moved to his mother’s land.
