Jóhann Soffónías Einarsson was born in Lyon County in Minnesota on April 18, 1894. He died on March 24, 1919. He had the last name Borgfjörð (Borgford) in the west.

Jóhann grew up in the family home in the town of Mary Hill, Manitoba. His parents were Einar Guðmundsson of Borgarfjörð east and his wife Þórstína Sofía Þorsteinsdóttir of Eiðaþinghá. Jóhann joined the Canadian army and was sent to France in October 1917. He was badly wounded there in the trenches and was sent home to Canada where he somewhat recovered. He began studying mechanics in Winnipeg but fell ill again and died.
