Jóhann came west to Ontario, Canada in 1874 and remained in Kinmount for the first winter. He moved to New Iceland a year later and took land in the Víðirnes Settlement south of Gimli, naming the farm Bólstað. They lived there 27 years and then moved in 1903, taking land just to the west in the settlement. He named the farm Breiðabólstað.
