Jóhann came west to Winnipeg, Manitoba with his parents in 1883. They settled in the Ísafold Settlement in New Iceland. Jóhann worked for 13 years fishing, either on Lake Winnipeg or north in Winnipegosis. He bought land near Selkirk and moved there in 1901. From there he went to the Lakes Settlement (Vatnabyggð) in Saskatchewan in 1907, he had taken the land in 1905. Valgerður moved with her parents to the United States in 1888 and first came to New York. From there, the family moved to Duluth, where her sister, Jónína, was born on August 23, 1891. They moved to Selkirk, Manitoba in 1893, and lived there.
