Jóhann emigrated to Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1876 and settled in the Árnes Settlement on land he called Hulduárhvammur. He bought land in the Thingvalla Settlement in N. Dakota in 1881 and named it Tungu. They lived there the rest of their lives.
