Jóhann Vilhjálmur Jónsson was born in New Iceland on May 25, 1923. He was known as Dr. Jóhann V Johnson in the west.

Jóhann was the son of Jón Björnsson and Jósefbína Jósefsdóttir, early settlers in New Iceland. Jóhann grew up there and attended school in Gimli and finished high school there. He joined the Canadian Air Force in early 1943 and was in both the Bahamas and Europe in WW2. He returned to Manitoba and studied veterinary medicine. Jóhann opened his own animal hospital in Marshalltown, Iowa and worked there for a few years before moving to Crystal Lake, Illinois where he worked for the state board.
