Tryggvi came west to Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1888 and worked for farmers near Brandon during the fall harvest that year. He and his brother Eiríkur went to the Hólar settlement (Tantallon) later in the autumn and arrived there on October 11 and took land. Jóhanna Rósa was the foster daughter of Helga Sigríður Ingjaldsdóttir and they came west to Winnipeg in 1888.
