Sigurður was the son of Jón Jónsson and Kristjana Magnúsdóttir, early settlers in New Iceland in 1886. He grew up there, took over farming from his father, and lived at Fagranes in the Árnes Settlement. Jóhanna came west in 1901 with her mother, the widow Súsanna Guðrún Jónsdóttir from Ásbjarnarstaðir at Vatnsnes.
