Jóhanna Þórunn Jónatansdóttir was born on November 18, 1872 in S. Múlasýsla. She died on April 13, 1948. She took the name Joan Thorunn Peterson in the west.

Björn emigrated west to Minnesota in 1879 with his parents, Björn Gíslason, and his wife, Aðalabjörg Jónsdóttir, and his siblings. They settled in Lyon County. Björn grew up there, attended country school, and graduated with a law degree from the University of Minnesota in 1900. He practiced law in Minneota, Minnesota and lived there. Jóhanna came to Minnesota in 1878 with her parents, Jónatan Jónatansson and Kristín Jónsdóttir, and her siblings. Jónatan emphasized the education of his children and Jóhanna became the first Icelandic girl to complete a degree from the University of Minnesota.
