Jóhannes came west to Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1876 and went on to New Iceland. He moved south from there to the Akra Settlement in N. Dakota. His brother, Ólafur, was married to Ragnheiður Ósk, the sister of Sigríður, Jóhannes’ wife. They had come west to the settlement in 1887, and the brothers a shared farm after that. They moved together to Brownwood, Manitoba in 1899.
