Jóhannes Gíslason was born in Húnavastnssýsla on March 18, 1857. He died in Manitoba in 1923. He took the last name Gillies.

Jóhannes came west to Manitoba in 1876 and lived for some time in Winnipeg. He later moved to the Argyle Settlement where he met Ólína. She had come west to Manitoba in 1878 with her parents, Guðmundur Magnússon and Helga Jónsdóttir. They settled in the Argyle Settlement. Jóhannes and Ólína began farming in the Hóla Settlement, were later near Cypress River, and lastly not far from Vita in the southwestern corner of the province.
