Jóhanna arrived in the West in October of 1910 and first went to Winnipeg. From there she made her way west to the Pacific Ocean where she settled in Vancouver. Jóhannes arrived there in 1912, straight from Iceland. They settled in Prince Rupert, where Jóhannes worked as a carpenter and Jóhanna worked as a seamstress and hat maker. She had studied art in Copenhagen. They later moved to Vancouver.
