Spouse: Anna Jóhannsdóttir b. 1832 in Blönduhlíð in Skagafjordur. She had a daughter from her first marriage, Sophia Asmundsdottir, b. c1853, who also emigrated to North America.
Children: 1. Sigrún b. June 6, 1867 2. Guðrún b. 1871 3. Jóhanna b. 1875. 4. Jónas b. 1882. They also had a foster son, Valdimar Þorláksson.
Jóhannes emigrated west with the four children in 1882. Anna emigrated a year later. They travelled to Minnesota and settled in the Lincoln County Settlement.
Jóhannes went back to Iceland 1907 and did not return. He died in Reykjavík.
