Jóhannes was the son of the couple Sigurgeir Björnsson and Guðfinna Jóhannesdóttir, early settlers in New Iceland in 1874. He was just a few months old when he moved with his parents and siblings south to N. Dakota in 1880. They first lived in the Garðar Settlement, then moved north to the Víkur settlement, near Mountain. Jóhannes grew up there, found his calling, and decided to become a teacher.
