Jón was the son of Árni Sigvaldason and his wife Guðrún Aradóttir, early Icelandic pioneers in the Lincoln County Settlement in Minnesota. Jón grew up there, went to school, and taught for a year in Minnesota before moving to Glenboro, Manitoba in 1917. Emily was the daughter of Jón Jónasson from Axarfjörður and Sigríður Magnúsdóttir from Borgarfjörður, pioneers in the Argyle Settlement. John bought land east of Glenboro and began farming. They moved to Longmont, Colorado, USA, where Frank, Jón’s brother, ran an extensive oil business.
