He came west to Winnipeg, Manitoba with his parents in 1889. He grew up in the Argyle Settlement and moved with them to Tantallon in 1900 and from there in 1910 to the Lakes Settlement (Vatnabyggð) in Saskatchewan. He bought land near Kandahar. Guðbjörg was in her first year when she emigrated west to Winnipeg, Manitoba with her parents, Jóhannes Jónsson and Guðrún Andrésdóttir, in 1882. They lived in Winnipeg.
