Jón Bjarni was the son of Ingimundur Jónsson and Marsilía Halldórsdóttir. He moved in 1894 with his parents to the Grunnavatn Settlement and then to the Brown Settlement in 1907. In 1916 he joined the Canadian Army, but due to ill health, he was not sent to the battlefield but instead served in the Canadian Defense Forces in Quebec. In 1919, he bought land from his father in the Brown Settlement and the family lived there after that. Jón was a keen book reader and Icelandic in spirit, he took an active part in social affairs.
