Jón came west to Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1888 with his parents who settled in Winnipeg. Jón moved to the Argyle Settlement with his mother in 1891 and from there he went to the Lakes Settlement (Vatnabyggð) in Saskatchewan in 1906 and took land in the Wynyard settlement. Lilja came west with her mother, Katrín Guðbrandsdóttir, and stepfather in 1883.
