Jón Björnsson was born in Vopnafjörður in N. Múlasýsla on July 4, 1886. He took the last name Johnson in the west.

Jón came west in 1892 with his parents, Björn Jónsson and Guðrún Grímsdóttir. They settled in the Víðirnes Settlement in New Iceland where Jón grew up. He was a farmer in New Iceland and worked as a fisherman as well. He took an active part in the community affairs of New Iceland and lived in Gimli when he got older. Jósefbína was the daughter of Jósef Sigurðsson of Eyjafjörður and Arnbjörg Jónsdóttir who came west in 1876.
