Jón Gíslason was born February 24, 1881 in N. Múlasýsla. He died on August 16, 1972 in Riverton.

Jón came west to Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1887 with his parents, Gísli Jónsson and Vilborg Ásmundsdóttir, and siblings. They first lived in the Fljóts Settlement, then moved on to the Geysir Settlement and lastly to Selkirk. That is where Jón met Þórhildur who had come west in 1894 with her mother, Margrét Magnúsdóttir. They first lived in Winnipeg Beach and then moved to the Árnes Settlement north of Gimli. In 1917 they made their final move to Riverton.
