Jón Gíslason was born on December 12, 1849 in Árnessýsla. He died on Washington Island on September 22, 1912.

Jón Gíslason emigrated west to Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1870. He traveled with three other Icelanders, and they were the first immigrants of the so-called Western Immigration Period 1870-1914. A Danish man, Wilhelm Wickmann went with them to Washington Island, where they bought their land. Jon had a business on the island for years and lived there all the time.
