Jón Hannes Finnbogason was born on December 13, 1899 in the Shoal Lake Settlement (Grunnavatnsbyggð) in Manitoba. Died in 1945. He had the name John Hannes Thorgilsson in the west.

Jón Hannes was the son of Þorgils Finnbogason, who went west with his parents in 1882. Jón’s mother was Málfríður Hallgerður Jónsdóttir. Þorgils and Málfríður settled in Vestfold in the Shoal Lake Settlement (Grunnavatnsbyggð) and Jón grew up there. Anna was the daughter of Páll Guðmundsson and Sigríður Eiríksdóttir, settlers in the Lundar Settlement. Jón and Anna bought Anna’s father’s land in 1925, as he had stopped farming at that time. They lived there after that and Jón was a big farmer, engaged in cattle breeding and grew all his grain himself.
