Jón emigrated to Winnipeg, Manitoba with Jónas Jónsson and his family in 1883 and joined his parents, Halldór Jónsson and Ingibjarg Jónatansdóttir, in the Fljóts Settlement. Anna emigrated west in the same year with her parents, Sigurður Björnsson and Guðfinna Oddsdóttir, who settled at Ekru in the Hnausa Settlement. Jón bought a house in Lundi (later Riverton) and lived there until 1905 when he sold it and bought land in the Víðir-Sandy Hills Settlement. He sold that in 1919 and moved to Riverton, where he lived until 1941 before moving to Winnipeg.
