Jón Halldórsson was born in S. Þingeyjarsýsla on February 21, 1838. He died in Chicago on September 23, 1919.

Jón came west to Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1872. There he worked various jobs like many of his countrymen. He was chosen to go to Nebraska in the spring of 1874 and bought land near Firth, a small town south of Lincoln. Þórvör had come west, but it was unclear whether she had taken part in the search for land in the spring of 1874. His mother and stepfather came west there in the summer of 1875 with his half-brothers and sisters. He later moved to Chicago after Þórvör’s death with his four sons and daughter.
