Jón Hjartarson was born on September 17, 1880 in Strandasýsla. He died on October 21, 1962. He took the name John Hjörtson in the west.
Spouse: 1) Þorgerður Aldís Ólafsdóttir b. in N. Dakota, d. January 30, 1918 2) Margrét Bjarnadóttir b. in N. Dakota in 1886, d. October 29, 1944.

Jón was taken in as a foster child by Oddur Jónsson and Ingveldur Samúelsdóttir and came west with them to Garðar, N. Dakota in 1883. Þorgerður was the daughter of Ólafur Ólafsson of Eyjafjörður and his wife Friðrika Friðriksdóttir. They came west in 1882 and settled south of Mountain, N. Dakota. Margrét’s parents were Bjarni Bjarnason and Sigríður Jóhanna Samúelsdóttir of Strandasýsla, pioneer settlers in the Garðar Settlement in 1882. Jón lived on his land until 1947, then moved to his daughter in Grand Forks, N. Dakota.
