Jón grew up in the home of his parents Eiríkur Jónsson and Vilborg Stefánsdóttir in Minneota, Minnesota. From there, the family moved to Duluth and later to the Akra Settlement in N. Dakota, but in 1901 the family moved to Canada and settled near Arborg, Manitoba. Jón became a farmer there and lived there the rest of his days. Hildur Jónína was the daughter of Sigfús Jónsson and Guðrún Hildibrandsdóttir who moved west to Manitoba in 1876. Sigurlína was the daughter of Baldvin Jónsson and Ingibjörg Pálsdóttir, who moved west from Skagafjörður in 1900.
