Jón Jónsson was born in 1849 in Skeggjastaðasókn in N. Múlasýsla. He died in S. Dakota on November 29, 1904. He took the name John J. Hoff in America.

Jón emigrated west to Ontario, Canada in 1874 and went to Kinmount. He left there a year later and settled in New Iceland. He probably married Sigurlaug there in 1878 because her first husband, Árni Jónsson, died shortly after coming to New Iceland. They moved to Minnesota, Minnesota in 1879 and took land in Lyon County. They moved from there in 1900 and spent a few years in Marshall, Minnesota, but in the 1904 census they are in Watertown, S. Dakota. Sigurlaug still lived there with her daughters in 1910.
