Jón Jónsson was born in N. Múlasýsla on September 9, 1864. He died in Winnipeg on June 11, 1956. He took the last name Vopni in the west.

Jón emigrated west to Winnipeg in 1887 and settled there. He was elected to the Winnipeg City Council in 1916. Sigurborg emigrated to Winnipeg the same year as Jón.
