He came west to Canada in 1893 with his parents, Jón Jónsson and Þórdís Halldórsdóttir, and sisters Vilborg and Halldóra. The family settled in the Ísafold Settlement in New Iceland but had to move at the beginning of the 20th century due to flooding. They settled in the Framnes Settlement while Jón went from there to Winnipeg with Vilborg. They lived there until 1928, then moved to Winnipegosis.
