Jón was ordained as a priest in Iceland in 1886, served there a variety of congregations but moved west to Winnipeg in Manitoba before the turn of the century and settled in the Lundar Settlement. The family did not move after that. He formed a congregation in the Settlement and founded a Sunday school. However, he never joined the Icelandic Church Society, so Rev. Runólfur Marteinsson was appointed the congregations’s pastor.
