Jón was the son of Jón Helgi Þorsteinsson and Albertína Arnþrúður Jónsdóttir, early settlers in the Geysir settlement in 1901. They named their land Helgavatn where Jón the younger grew up and then took over farming there. Sigurdís Una was the daughter of Jón Sigurðsson and María Kristína Friðfinnsdóttir, also settlers in the Geysir settlement.
