Jón was the son of Reverend Jónas Ari Sigurðsson and his second wife, Stefanía Ólafsdóttir. He attended elementary school in the west on the Pacific Coast, then moved east to the Þingvalla Settlement in Saskatchewan in 1918 and to Selkirk, Manitoba in 1927. He graduated from Manitoba Medical College in 1936. He enlisted in the United States Army in 1941 and was a military physician in the Pacific and Europe. He was discharged from the Army in 1951 and opened a clinic in Los Angeles. He lived there until his death.
