Jón was the son of Ólaf Árnason and Margrét Halldórsdóttir who came west to New Iceland with a group of children in 1876. They moved from there to Hensel, N. Dakota in 1882 after living in Winnipeg for a year. Jón grew up in N. Dakota and later worked on whatever was available in the Icelandic settlements. He moved north to the Argyle Settlement in 1897 and worked mainly on building houses in settlements in the following years. Newly married, they settled in Glenboro and he worked for the first few years as a carpenter, but in 1911 they bought a lumber and coal business, which they ran with great success under the name Crowe & Olafson. They sold it in 1927 and moved to Winnipeg.
