Jón Ólafsson

Jón Ólafsson was born in S. Múlasýsla on March 20, 1850. He died in Reykjavík on July 11, 1916.

Spouse: August 20, 1878 Helga Eiríksdóttir b. January 21, 1860, d. February 17, 1925.

Children: 1. Ólafur b. 1882 2. Sigríður b. 1883 3. Gísli b. 1888 4. Páll b. 1893 in Winnipeg. Jón had a son with Halldóra Guðmundsdóttir: Guðjón b. 1876. Jón had another son with Þóra Þorvarðardóttir: Kristján Austmann b. in the Argyle Settlement on September 25, 1890.

Jón emigrated to Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1873 and lived there until the spring of 1875. Traveling west with him was Þóra and their son Kristján. He returned to Iceland, but then returned to the Western home in 1890 and worked as an editor in Winnipeg 1890–1894. He moved to Chicago and worked there until 1897 when he again returned to Iceland and lived the rest of his days in Reykjavík. Helga followed her husband with three of their children.
