Jón Ólafsson was born on January 15, 1828 in Dalasýsla. He died in Saskatchewan on August 15, 1890.

Jón and Kristbjörg came west to Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1888 with their daughter Ása. Their son, Bergþór Ólafur, had come west with his wife in 1886. Jón moved west to the Þingvalla Settlement in Saskatchewan the same year and the couple lived with Ása and Tómas Pálsson the first winter. Jón took land in the community the next spring.
