Jón Pétursson was born in Markland, Nova Scotia on January 23, 1878. He died in the Mouse River Settlement in N. Dakota on September 16, 1921. He had the name Jon Peter Hillman in the west.

Jón came west from Markland in 1881 with his parents, Pétur Jónsson and Ólöf Kjartansdóttir. They settled in the Akra Settlement in N. Dakota. Steinunn came west to N. Dakota in 1888 with her parents, Rósenkur Frímann Hannesson and Helga Jóhannesdóttir, and siblings. Jón and Steinunn moved in the spring of 1902 to the Mouse River Settlement and lived there the rest of their lives.
