Jón Pálmason was born in Ísafjarðarsýsla on January 1, 1864.
Spouse: August 18, 1884 Þórunn Ingibjörg Jónsdóttir b. in Dalasýsla on June 25, 1860, d. in Ontario July 6, 1935.
Children: Sigurjón Hjaltalín died as a youngster in Keewatin. They also had a foster son Hannes Jón Harald, the son of Guðrún Hannesdóttir and Pál Guðmundsson.
Jón and Þórunn emigrated west to Winnipeg, Manitoba with little Sigurjón in 1887. They lived there for the first two years but then moved to Keewatin, Ontario, where Jón worked for Lake of the Woods Milling Co. until the turn of the century. They then moved onto land on the bank of the Winnipeg River near the village. Jón fished there and operated a sawmill where he traded a variety of lumber and also sold firewood.
