Jón came west to Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1900 and lived in the city until 1907. He moved from there to the Grunnavatn Settlement where he lived for another year and a half, and from there to Oak Point. After four years, he moved to the Álftardals Settlement and settled in the village of Swan River.
