Jón Þorsteinn Gíslason was born in the Þingvalla settlement in Saskatchewan on December 18, 1891. He had the name Jón Th. Bíldfell in the west.

Jón was the son of Gísli Jónsson and Valgerður Eiríksdóttir, pioneer settlers in Foam Lake, Saskatchewan. Jón’s grandfather was Jón Ögmundsson from Bíldsfell in Árnessýsla, who came west with his wife and children in 1887. Jón Ögmundsson took his father’s last name of Bíldfell in the west. Jón Þorsteinn came west with his parents to Fishing Lake in the Lakes settlement (Vatnabyggð) in 1892 and took land near Foam Lake in 1894. He took over his father Gísli’s farm in 1929.
