Jón came west to Winnipeg in 1899 with his parents, Þorkell Jónsson and Ingveldur Bjarnadóttir. They settled in the Lundar Settlement and that is where Jón grew up. He became a contractor, building houses in many parts of Manitoba but also in Winnipeg. There he married and lived for many years, but when his health deteriorated, the family moved to Victoria, Vancouver Island.
