Jón Thorlacius was born on January 26, 1923 in the Lakes settlement (Vatnabyggð). He died on February 18, 1957.

Jón was the son of Pétur Thorlacius and Guðrún Margrét Jónsdóttir, pioneer settlers in the Lakes settlement (Vatnabyggð). Lillian’s parents were Pétur Steingrímsson and Elizabeth Readman of Vatnabyggð. Pétur came west with his parents, Steingrímur Þorsteinsson and Petrína Guðmundsdóttir, across the sea in 1893. Jón and Lillian lived near Kandahar in Vatnabyggð and were farmers. In addition, Jón took on the transport of livestock from several villages in Vatnabyggð to Winnipeg for years.
