Jóna Solveig grew up in N. Dakota with her parents, Sigurður Kráksson and his second wife, Kristín Þorsteinsdóttir.  Þórður came west with his parents to Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1890. He grew up with them in N. Dakota and moved with them to the Lakes Settlement (Vatnabyggð) in Saskatchewan in 1907 and took land in the Wynyard area in 1909. Jóna later moved west to Vancouver.
