Jónas came west to Winnipeg in 1887 and went straight to his sister, Anna, who lived in the Garðar Settlement in N.Dakota. She had married Kristján Samúelsson, a farmer in the settlement in 1886. Jónas stayed with them for almost twenty years, then went north to Lake Winnipeg and settled in Poplar Park. He fished on the lake and worked on house construction in Winnipeg between seasons. He moved north to Mikley in 1914 and lived in Reynistaðir after that. A total of seven of his siblings moved to the West.
