Jónas Jónsson was born in Húnavatnssýsla on January 24, 1865. He died in Minneapolis, Minnesota on November 8, 1930. He took the name John Svindal or Swindal in the west.

They came west to Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1893 and moved south from there to Minnesota. They first lived in the town of Marshall and later near Minneota in Lyon County, where Jónas built a house and the family lived until 1910. They then moved to Watertown, S. Dakota and, in 1920, to Aberdeen, SD. The family moved to Minneapolis in 1925.
