Jónas came west to Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1889. He had been a hired hand in W. Skaftafellssýsla. He stayed briefly in Manitoba and went west to Victoria, British Columbia. From there he went to Point Roberts in Washington state. Quite a few went west to the Pacific Ocean from the county in 1887 and 1888, and that no doubt influenced Jónas to go there. Although the stopover in Winnipeg was short, it was enough for him to make up his mind there, the sisters Þórunn and Ingibjörg had come there in 1887. They accompanied Jónas on the journey west to Victoria, and Ingibjörg must have taken care of Þórunn and her children during her illness. Their sisters’ brother, Jón Ágúst, came west by sea in 1886 and settled at Point Roberts in 1894.
