Jónas Þorláksson was born on February 3, 1890 in S. Þingeyjarsýsla.
Unmarried and childless.
He came west to Manitoba in 1893 with his parents, Þorlákur Jónasson and Kristrún Pétursdóttir. Jónas went to school, completed his B.A. degree from the University of Manitoba in 1912, and later obtained a teaching degree. He joined the Canadian Army and served 1916-17 but had to retire due to vision problems. In the following years he taught widely in Manitoba, but in later years he worked for the Manitoba Department of Education and lived in Winnipeg. He moved to Gimli in 1958 and lived at Bethel.
