Jónatan was the son of Jóhann Valdimar Jónatansson and Hólmfríður Eiríksdóttir, early settlers in the Árnes settlement in Manitoba in 1892. Jónatan grew up in New Iceland and when he was young, he got to know fishing, timber production but then learned to repair electrical appliances and sold sewing machines.
